Part I: Tamil Language Eligibility Test
100 questions, 100 marks, qualifying only (common to both quotas):
- Grammar: letters and words, parts of speech, sandhi, prosody (யாப்பு), figures of speech (அணி), splitting and joining words, antonyms, error correction, Tamil words for English terms.
- Literature: Thirukkural, Tholkappiyam, Kamba Ramayanam, Ettuthogai and Pathuppattu, the five great and five minor epics, devotional, folk and modern literature.
- Tamil scholars and their service to Tamil: writers, poets and reformers, the antiquity of Tamil and Tamil culture.
Part II: General Knowledge
80 questions (40 marks) for the open quota:
- General Science: physics, chemistry and biology, inventions and scientists, human physiology, diseases, nutrition, genetics, environment and ecology
- History: India from the Indus Valley Civilisation to the present, and major world events
- Geography: regions of India, monsoon, crops, minerals, industries, ports, forests, wildlife and population
- Economics: agriculture, industry, rural development, inflation, unemployment, trade and planning
- Indian Polity: the Constitution, citizenship, elections, Parliament and state legislatures, the judiciary, local government
- General knowledge and current affairs: science and technology, arts and culture of India and Tamil Nadu, sports, awards, books and authors
Part II: Psychology test
60 questions (30 marks) for the open quota:
- Logical analysis of given information
- Numerical analysis: quick numerical ability
- Communication skills: effective use of Tamil and English
- Information handling: inferences and connected facts from given information
- Mental ability: inductive and deductive reasoning
Departmental quota: police subjects
Serving police personnel write an 85-mark Part II: General Knowledge (30 questions, 15 marks) and a Part B of 140 questions (70 marks) with the Psychology test plus:
- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the Indian Penal Code in July 2024
- Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure
- Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), which replaced the Indian Evidence Act
- Police Standing Orders and Police Administration
