RRB Group D salary starts at a basic pay of ₹18,000 a month, Level 1 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, for every post in the 2026 notice (CEN 09/2025). Add Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance, and a new recruit posted in Chennai earns about ₹36,360 a month gross, or about ₹33,480 after the pension deduction; in a smaller Tamil Nadu town it is about ₹32,040 and ₹29,160, as of 11 October 2026. Basic pay is the same in every railway zone. Only the allowances change with the town you are posted in.

RRB Group D posts and salary in 2026

CEN 09/2025 recruits for 22,195 posts across India, all in Level 1 with an initial pay of ₹18,000 (CEN 09/2025, full notice). The posts are Track Maintainer Grade IV, Pointsman B, and Assistant posts in the Signal and Telecom, Traction (TRD), TL and AC, Bridge, P-Way, Track Machine, Carriage and Wagon, Loco Shed and Operations (Electrical) units.

Southern Railway, the zone RRB Chennai recruits for, has 1,036 of these posts (Annexure B of the notice):

Every post starts at the same ₹18,000, so the post you are allotted changes your work and your promotion ladder, not your first salary. Pointsman B is now called Pointsmen Grade IV: the Railway Board restructured the cadre with effect from 3 April 2026 (Railway Board letter of 6 August 2026, reproduced by GovtStaff).

Two lines in the notice matter (paras 1.16 and 1.15): during training, where a post has one, you get a stipend, not the full salary; and you can't ask for a transfer to another railway until you have 5 to 10 years of service.

How RRB Group D in-hand salary is worked out

Every part of the pay slip is tied to your basic pay:

  • Basic pay: ₹18,000 when you join.

  • Dearness Allowance (DA): a percentage of basic that the central government revises twice a year. At 60% from 1 January 2026, it is ₹10,800.

  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): 30% of basic in X-class cities, 20% in Y-class and 10% everywhere else (Z-class), so ₹5,400, ₹3,600 or ₹1,800. These are the rates once DA has crossed 50%, as it has (Department of Expenditure order, 7 July 2017). You don't get HRA if you live in railway quarters.

  • Transport Allowance (TA): for Levels 1 and 2 it is ₹1,350 in the listed bigger cities and ₹900 elsewhere, plus DA on it, which makes ₹2,160 or ₹1,440 at 60% DA (Department of Expenditure order, 7 July 2017). In Tamil Nadu the higher rate applies in Chennai and Coimbatore.

The main deduction is your pension contribution: 10% of basic plus DA, ₹2,880 a month to begin with, paid into the National Pension System, or into the Unified Pension Scheme if you choose it (UPS notified 24 January 2025, PIB; the railways notified their own UPS rules in September 2026, reported by Outlook Money). After that come small items such as group insurance and professional tax, and income tax only if your yearly income is above the tax-free limit.

The DA, HRA and TA orders above are the central government's; the Railway Board applies them to railway staff through its own orders.

RRB Group D salary per month in Tamil Nadu towns

HRA classes for central government staff come from a 2015 order: in Tamil Nadu, Chennai is the only X-class city; Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Tiruppur and Erode are Y-class; every other town is Z-class (Department of Expenditure order, 21 July 2015).

Approximate pay in the first month at DA of 60% (the rate as of 11 October 2026):

Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Tiruppur, Erode

₹30,960

Other towns

₹29,160

Over a year that is about ₹4.36 lakh gross in Chennai and ₹3.84 lakh in a smaller town. Coimbatore sits ₹720 a month above Madurai because it pays the higher city TA. The ₹4,320 gap between Chennai and a small town is mostly HRA, which exists because rent in Chennai costs more.

Allowances some posts get on top

  • Risk and Hardship Allowance for Track Maintainers. All four Track Maintainer grades get it; it was ₹2,700 a month when the railways introduced it under the 7th Pay Commission in 2017 (RBE No. 87/2017, reproduced by StaffNews). The Railway Board clarified in March 2018 that only the Track Maintainer category is eligible, so Pointsmen and Assistants don't get it. Check the current rate with your unit when you join.

  • Night duty allowance for hours worked on night shifts, which depends on your roster.

Neither is in the tables above, so actual pay slips can be higher.

Perks that don't show in the in-hand figure

  • Railway passes and PTOs. Railway staff and eligible family members get a set number of free privilege passes each year, plus Privilege Ticket Orders for tickets at one third of the fare. The number and class depend on your pay level and years of service, under the Railway Servants (Pass) Rules, 1986.

  • Medical care. Treatment for you and your dependent family at railway hospitals and health units.

  • Quarters. Railway quarters are allotted where they are available. If you take one, HRA stops and a licence fee is recovered from pay.

  • Pension. The government also pays into your NPS or UPS account, on top of your own 10%.

RRB Group D salary after 5 years

Basic pay goes up by about 3% once a year, on 1 January or 1 July depending on when you joined, to the next cell of the Level 1 pay matrix. Without a promotion, it looks like this on the current matrix:

At today's 60% DA, a basic of ₹20,900 would mean about ₹41,870 a month gross in Chennai (₹38,526 after the pension contribution) and about ₹36,970 in a Z-class town (₹33,626). That is a comparison at today's rates, not a forecast: DA changes twice a year, and a new pay matrix will change every number here.

What about the 8th Pay Commission?

It was set up by a notification of 3 November 2025 (8th CPC) and given 18 months; in October 2026 it was still meeting employee groups (reported by The Economic Times). No new pay matrix has been announced. Any "Group D salary after 8th Pay Commission" figure you see online is someone's guess at the fitment factor, not an official number.

MACP after 10, 20 and 30 years

If you are not promoted, the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme moves you to the next level of the pay matrix after 10, 20 and 30 years of service, provided your service record meets the required standard. Promotions you earn along the way count towards these three upgrades.

How promotion works from Level 1

Each Group D post sits in its own cadre, and how fast you move depends on vacancies and seniority in your unit:

  • Pointsmen. The restructured cadre has four grades, and each higher grade is filled by promotion on seniority-cum-suitability after 2 years in the grade below (Railway Board, RBE No. 80/2026, 1 October 2026, reproduced by RailwayNiyam).

  • Track Maintainers have four grades of their own, from Grade IV up to Grade I, within the engineering department.

  • Assistants in technical units such as Signal and Telecom, Carriage and Wagon or Electrical usually move towards Technician posts, where an ITI and departmental trade tests matter.

  • Departmental exams. 25% of the direct-recruitment vacancies in several Group C categories are filled through a General Departmental Competitive Examination (GDCE) for serving regular employees who hold the qualification the post needs (Railway Board clarification, RBE No. 112/2023, reproduced by StaffNews).

  • Open RRB exams. Notices such as CEN 09/2025 let serving employees apply directly, informing their employer, with a no-objection certificate at document verification.

Group D salary compared with RRB NTPC

With Class 12 or a degree, NTPC posts start higher. First-month pay in Chennai at 60% DA, after the pension contribution:

The jump from Level 2 to Level 3 is bigger than the basic pay suggests, because transport allowance in Chennai rises from ₹1,350 to ₹3,600 (plus DA) at Level 3. The post-wise detail is in RRB NTPC salary.

Waiting for the CEN 09/2025 result

The CEN 09/2025 CBT was held from 3 to 25 August 2026 (reported by ExamAtlas); the result had not been declared as of 11 October 2026. How last cycle's RRB Chennai cut-off worked is in RRB Group D cut off for RRB Chennai. The exam pattern, eligibility and selection stages are in the RRB Group D exam guide, and the topic list is on the RRB Group D syllabus page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RRB Group D salary per month?

Basic pay is ₹18,000 (Level 1). With DA at 60% of basic, HRA and transport allowance, a new recruit gets about ₹36,360 a month gross in Chennai and about ₹32,040 in a smaller Tamil Nadu town, as of 11 October 2026.

What is the RRB Group D in-hand salary?

After the 10% pension contribution, about ₹33,480 a month in Chennai, ₹31,680 in Coimbatore, ₹30,960 in Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Tiruppur or Erode, and ₹29,160 in other towns, before small deductions such as group insurance.

What is the RRB Group D salary after 5 years?

Five annual increments take basic pay from ₹18,000 to ₹20,900 on the current pay matrix. At today's 60% DA that is about ₹41,870 a month gross in Chennai, but DA revisions and the 8th Pay Commission will change the figure.

Do all RRB Group D posts get the same salary?

Yes. Every post in CEN 09/2025 is in Level 1 with a starting basic of ₹18,000. HRA and transport allowance depend on the town, and Track Maintainers also get a risk and hardship allowance.

Has the 8th Pay Commission changed RRB Group D salary?

Not yet. The 8th Central Pay Commission was set up in November 2025 and was still consulting in October 2026, so Group D pay still follows the 7th CPC pay matrix. Figures online for 'after 8th Pay Commission' are guesses.

How does a Group D employee get promoted?

Within your own cadre: Pointsmen, for example, can move from Grade IV (Level 1) to Grade III (Level 2) after 2 years on seniority-cum-suitability. Departmental exams (GDCE) and MACP after 10, 20 and 30 years are other routes.
