SBI Clerk salary starts at a basic pay of ₹26,730 a month, and SBI puts the total starting pay at about ₹46,000 a month for a clerk posted in a metro like Mumbai. Both figures come from SBI's own Junior Associates notice for 2026, CRPD/CR/2026-27/17. What you get in hand is lower, and how much lower depends on where you are posted and what is deducted.

"SBI Junior Associate salary" and "SBI Clerk salary" mean the same thing: Junior Associate is the official name of the clerk post. The post needs a degree, so every new clerk gets the two advance increments for graduates and starts at ₹26,730 rather than the scale minimum of ₹24,050.

Probation lasts at least 6 months, during which you complete the e-lessons SBI prescribes. The notice does not list a separate probation pay.

What makes up the starting salary

SBI's figure of about ₹46,000 is a total of several parts. The notice names DA and "other allowances" and says plainly that allowances vary with the place of posting. These are the parts of a bank clerk's monthly pay:

Part

What it is

Basic pay

₹26,730 at joining. Most other parts are worked out from it.

Dearness allowance (DA)

A percentage of pay, revised every three months in line with consumer prices. It changes more often than any other part.

House rent allowance (HRA)

Depends on the place of posting: higher in big cities, lower in smaller towns.

Special allowance

A fixed percentage of basic pay paid to clerical staff under the banks' wage settlement.

Other allowances

Paid under the bank's rules; some depend on the branch and the work.

On top of monthly pay, the notice lists provident fund, a pension under NPS, medical benefits, leave fare and other perquisites, "as per instructions of the Bank".

We don't print a DA percentage here because it moves every quarter. SBI's ₹46,000 uses the rate that applied when the notice came out in August 2026.

SBI Clerk in-hand salary: what comes off

In-hand salary is what reaches your bank account after deductions. SBI's ₹46,000 is a gross figure, so the in-hand amount is lower. The usual deductions are:

  • Your provident fund and NPS contributions, which are worked out on your pay.

  • Professional tax, which Tamil Nadu charges on salaries.

  • Income tax deducted at source, if your taxable income is high enough to attract tax.

  • Loan instalments, union subscriptions or other recoveries you have agreed to.

Coaching sites publish in-hand estimates, but each uses its own DA and HRA assumptions and they often disagree with one another. Treat them as rough. Your first payslip is the only exact answer.

SBI Clerk salary in Tamil Nadu

The basic pay is the same in every state: ₹26,730 at joining, whether your branch is in Chennai, Coimbatore or a village in Ramanathapuram district. What changes is the place-based part of pay.

  • Chennai is a metro, like the Mumbai example SBI gives, but SBI doesn't publish a Chennai figure. Treat ₹46,000 as a guide, not a promise.

  • Semi-urban and rural branches pay a lower HRA and other place-based allowances, so total pay is below the metro figure even though the basic is the same.

The other things a Tamil Nadu candidate should know before counting on this salary:

  • 1,539 posts in Tamil Nadu in 2026 (1,410 regular and 129 backlog) out of 9,766 across India. The merit list is drawn state by state and category by category, and you are posted in the state you applied for.

  • Tamil is required. If your Class 10 or 12 mark sheet shows you studied Tamil, you skip the language test. Otherwise you take it after provisional selection and before joining, and failing it means no appointment.

  • Five years in Tamil Nadu. There is no inter-state transfer before 5 years of service. After that, SBI considers transfer requests only in exceptional cases, such as extreme compassionate grounds or a spouse posted elsewhere.

Pay scale and SBI Clerk salary after 5 years

The notice prints the full clerical scale: ₹24,050 – 1,340/3 – 28,070 – 1,650/3 – 33,020 – 2,000/4 – 41,020 – 2,340/7 – 57,400 – 4,400/1 – 61,800 – 2,680/1 – 64,480. Read "1,340/3" as three increments of ₹1,340 each. Increments come once a year, so a clerk who joins at ₹26,730 moves up like this if there is no promotion:

Years of service

Basic pay

At joining

₹26,730

After 1 year

₹28,070

After 3 years

₹31,370

After 5 years

₹35,020

After 10 years

₹45,700

Top of the scale (after 17 years)

₹64,480

This is basic pay only. DA and HRA are worked out on pay, so they rise with each increment too. Bank pay scales are also revised from time to time through industry-wide wage settlements; the table uses the scale printed in the 2026 notice.

From clerk to officer: promotion and the SBI PO route

There are two ways up from the clerk's desk.

  1. Internal promotion. SBI runs promotion processes through which clerical staff move into the officer cadre, Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I), the grade SBI POs join in. You become eligible after a set period of service and go through a written test and an interview. The rules are in SBI's promotion policy and change over time, so check the current circular once you join.

  2. The SBI PO exam. A clerk can write SBI PO like any other graduate, within the PO age limit (21 to 30 in 2026, with relaxations) and attempt limits.

Here is the gap between the two posts, both from SBI's 2026 notices:

SBI Clerk

SBI PO

Grade

Clerical cadre

JMGS-I (officer)

Starting basic

₹26,730

₹48,480 plus 4 advance increments of ₹2,000 (₹56,480)

SBI's pay figure

About ₹46,000 a month in a metro like Mumbai

Cost to company about ₹21.97 lakh a year at Mumbai

The two pay figures aren't measured the same way (cost to company includes the bank's own contributions and perks), but the basic pay is: a PO starts on more than double a clerk's basic. Source: SBI PO 2026 notice.

What to do next

The 2026 clerk prelims were held on 26 and 27 September; the mains is tentatively in November 2026. For the exam pattern, eligibility and the Tamil test in full, read our SBI Clerk and PO guide, and use the topic-wise syllabus to plan your revision. Check updates on SBI's careers page.

If you are preparing for this cycle or the next, Thervu has SBI Clerk and PO mock tests in Tamil and English. They are timed, marked the moment you submit with the exam's quarter-mark negative marking, and the questions you get wrong go into a revision list so you can go back to them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SBI Clerk salary per month?

SBI's 2026 notice puts the starting basic pay at ₹26,730 and the total starting pay at about ₹46,000 a month for a clerk posted in a metro like Mumbai, including DA and other allowances. Pay in smaller towns is lower because some allowances depend on the place of posting.

What is the SBI Clerk in-hand salary?

SBI does not publish an in-hand figure. In-hand pay is the gross amount minus your provident fund and NPS contributions, professional tax and any income tax or other recoveries, so it is lower than the ₹46,000 metro figure.

What is the SBI Clerk salary in Tamil Nadu?

The basic pay is the same in every state: ₹26,730 at joining. SBI does not publish a Chennai or Tamil Nadu figure; a metro posting such as Chennai gets higher place-based allowances than a semi-urban or rural branch.

What is the SBI Clerk salary after 5 years?

On the pay scale printed in the 2026 notice, five yearly increments take the basic pay from ₹26,730 to ₹35,020, assuming no promotion. DA and HRA are worked out on pay, so they rise with it.

Is SBI Junior Associate the same as SBI Clerk?

Yes. Junior Associate (Customer Support & Sales) is the official name of SBI's clerk post, so the Junior Associate salary and the SBI Clerk salary are the same.

Can an SBI Clerk become an officer?

Yes. SBI runs internal promotion processes that move clerical staff into the officer grade after a set period of service, and clerks can also write the SBI PO exam if they are within its age and attempt limits.
