SBI's 2026 PO notice puts the starting basic pay at ₹56,480 and the cost to company at about ₹21.97 lakh a year in Mumbai. Here is what that means each month, the basic pay year by year, how promotion works, and how the pay compares with SBI Clerk and IBPS PO.

SBI PO salary starts at a basic pay of ₹56,480 a month: the scale minimum of ₹48,480 plus four advance increments of ₹2,000 each. SBI puts the approximate cost to company (CTC) of a new PO at about ₹21.97 lakh a year at its Mumbai centre. Both figures come from SBI's Probationary Officers notice for 2026, CRPD/PO/2026-27/09. CTC is not take-home pay, and this post explains the gap without guessing an in-hand number.

Allowances and benefits

Bond

Read the scale like this: "2,000/7" means seven increments of ₹2,000 each, one a year. A PO's four advance increments use up four of those seven steps on the first day, which is why a new PO starts at ₹56,480 rather than ₹48,480. The notice lists no separate training or probation pay.

Is SBI Assistant Manager salary the same?

Assistant Manager is the title SBI gives its JMGS-I posts. Its 2026 recruitment of Assistant Manager (Law), for example, is in JMGS-I on exactly the same scale. So "SBI Assistant Manager salary" and "SBI PO salary" run on one scale; what the PO notice adds is the four advance increments at joining.

What the ₹21.97 lakh CTC means, and SBI PO in-hand salary

CTC (cost to company) is everything the bank expects to spend on you in a year, not what reaches your account. Alongside monthly pay it counts the bank's own NPS contribution, the cost of your housing, medical cover, leave fare concession and other perks. That is why ₹21.97 lakh divided by 12, about ₹1.83 lakh, is not a monthly salary.

Your monthly gross pay is made up of these parts:

Part

What it is

Basic pay

₹56,480 at joining. Most other parts are worked out from it.

Dearness allowance (DA)

A percentage of pay, revised every three months in line with consumer prices.

HRA or leased housing

Depends on the place of posting. The notice lists both HRA and a lease rental facility; which applies depends on SBI's rules and the housing you take.

City compensatory allowance (CCA)

Paid in larger cities.

Other allowances

As per SBI's rules; some depend on the post and the branch.

SBI PO in-hand salary for freshers is that gross minus deductions: your own PF and NPS contributions, professional tax where the state levies it (Tamil Nadu does), income tax deducted at source if your income attracts tax, and any loan or other recoveries you agree to.

Coaching sites publish in-hand estimates, but each assumes its own DA rate, city and tax regime, and they disagree with one another. Treat them as rough. We don't print a DA percentage here because it moves every quarter.

SBI PO salary after 5 years: basic pay year by year

If you get one increment a year and no promotion, the scale in the 2026 notice moves a new PO's basic pay like this:

After 1 year

₹58,480

After 2 years

₹60,480

After 10 years

This table is basic pay only, worked out by us from the scale printed in the notice. DA, HRA and the other pay-linked allowances are calculated on pay, so they rise with each step too. Bank pay scales are also revised every few years through industry-wide wage settlements, which would change these numbers.

Increments stop at the top of the scale, so long-term salary growth comes mainly from promotion: each higher grade has a higher scale.

Promotion: from JMGS-I to Manager and beyond

SBI's officer grades run from Junior Management (Scale I) through Middle Management (Scales II and III), Senior Management (Scales IV and V) and the Top Executive grades above them. The first three, with the basic pay scales from SBI's own recruitment notices:

Grade

₹48,480 – ₹85,920

MMGS-II

Deputy Manager

MMGS-III

Sources: the PO notice, the 2026 Assistant Manager and Deputy Manager (Law) notice and the 2025 Manager (Risk Specialist) notice.

Promotion is not automatic and has no fixed timetable. SBI runs promotion rounds under its promotion policy: you become eligible after a minimum period in your grade and are then assessed under the rules in force at the time. On promotion, your basic pay is re-fixed in the higher scale under the bank's rules. The PO notice itself promises only an attractive promotion policy that lets meritorious officers reach top management reasonably quickly, so treat any "promotion chart with years" on the internet as an estimate.

SBI PO vs SBI Clerk salary

The two "SBI's pay figure" rows measure different things: ₹46,000 is a monthly gross, while ₹21.97 lakh is the bank's annual cost. Basic pay is the like-for-like comparison, and a PO starts on more than twice a clerk's basic.

The trade-off is in the conditions. A clerk selected for Tamil Nadu works in Tamil Nadu; a PO can be allotted to any SBI circle in India, and the notice warns that requests for a particular place may not be entertained. PO seats are also scarcer: 1,500 vacancies across India in 2026, against 1,539 clerk posts in Tamil Nadu alone, and PO candidates face a group exercise and an interview as well.

SBI PO vs IBPS PO salary

IBPS recruits POs for 11 other public sector banks, including the Chennai-based Indian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank. Its 2026 notice, CRP PO/MT-XVI, prints the same JMGS-I scale as SBI's.

On the two notices alone, an SBI PO starts ₹8,000 a month ahead on basic pay. Allowances, housing and perks differ from bank to bank, so compare whole packages only when you have the bank's own terms in hand.

Probation, bond and posting

These conditions come with the salary, so read them before you count on it:

  • Probation: two years, with continuous assessment. Officers who meet the bank's standards are confirmed in JMGS-I; the notice says the services of those who don't may be terminated.

  • Bond: ₹2 lakh, signed at joining, to serve at least three years. SBI invokes it if you resign before three years are up.

  • Posting: anywhere in India, and SBI can also depute officers to its associates or subsidiaries. The notice also mentions opportunities for postings abroad.

  • Before joining: an online course in basic banking that you complete before your first day.

For a Tamil Nadu candidate the posting rule matters most: HRA and CCA depend on the city you are sent to, not on your home town.

What to do next

As of 11 October 2026, the result of the SBI PO 2026 mains (held on 12 September) is awaited. SBI's notice schedules Phase III, a psychometric test, group exercise and interview, for October–November and the final result for November–December 2026. SBI has not announced its next PO notice. For the pattern, eligibility and attempt limits, read our SBI Clerk and PO guide, and plan revision with the topic-wise syllabus. If the clerk route suits you better, see the SBI Clerk cut-off for Tamil Nadu. Updates appear on SBI's careers page.

Thervu has SBI Clerk and PO mock tests in Tamil and English. They are timed, marked the moment you submit with the exam's quarter-mark negative marking, and the questions you get wrong come back in a revision list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the SBI PO salary per month?

The 2026 notice puts the starting basic pay at ₹56,480 a month (₹48,480 plus four advance increments), plus DA, HRA or leased housing, CCA and other allowances. SBI does not publish a monthly gross or in-hand figure; it gives an approximate cost to company of ₹21.97 lakh a year at Mumbai.

What is the SBI PO salary after 5 years?

With one increment a year and no promotion, the scale in the 2026 notice takes the basic pay from ₹56,480 at joining to ₹67,160 after five years. DA and other pay-linked allowances rise with it, and a promotion to MMGS-II moves you to a higher scale.

What is the SBI PO in-hand salary for freshers?

SBI does not publish one. The ₹21.97 lakh figure is cost to company, which includes the bank's own contributions and perks. In-hand pay is the monthly gross minus your PF and NPS contributions, professional tax, any income tax and other recoveries, so your first payslip is the only exact answer.

Is SBI Assistant Manager salary the same as SBI PO salary?

They are on the same scale. Assistant Manager is SBI's title for JMGS-I posts, and its 2026 Assistant Manager (Law) notice uses the same ₹48,480 to ₹85,920 scale as the PO notice. The PO notice adds four advance increments, so a PO starts at ₹56,480.

Which pays more, SBI PO or IBPS PO?

Both are on the same JMGS-I scale of ₹48,480 to ₹85,920. SBI's 2026 notice adds four advance increments at joining; IBPS's 2026 notice mentions none, so on the notices alone an SBI PO starts ₹8,000 a month ahead on basic pay. Allowances follow each bank's own rules.

Will the 8th Pay Commission increase SBI PO salary?

No. Pay commissions set pay for central government employees. Bank staff pay, including SBI's, is revised through wage settlements negotiated with the banks through the Indian Banks' Association.
