The TNUSRB physical test comes after the written exam and has three parts: a Physical Measurement Test (height, and chest for men), an Endurance Test (a timed run) and a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) of three events. The first two are pass-or-fail. The PET is scored: it carries 24 of the 100 final marks for Grade II Police Constables, Jail Warders and Firemen, and 15 of 100 for Sub-Inspectors. Every standard below is from TNUSRB's 2025 notifications.

81 cm, expanding by at least 5 cm

  • These are the same for constable and SI.

  • Measurements are rounded to the nearest 0.5 cm. For example, 169.8 cm counts as 170.0 cm, but 169.7 cm counts as 169.5 cm. Chest is rounded the same way.

  • Only the board's measurement counts. The SI notification says height or chest certificates from hospitals are not accepted, and that a candidate who disputes a measurement can appeal for re-measurement at the centre.

  • Ex-servicemen are exempt from the measurement test.

  • Transgender candidates choose to appear as male or female in the application, then take every test with that group and to its standards. The choice can't be changed later.

Women

Ex-servicemen

The run is qualifying only, and it is the same for constable and SI. Both notifications say no excuse of ill health or injury will be accepted at the centre, so plan your training to be fit on the day.

Physical efficiency test for constables: events and marks

This is the TNUSRB PC physical test that earns marks, and it applies to Grade II Police Constable, Jail Warder and Fireman candidates alike. There are three events. In each, a one-star performance earns 4 marks and a two-star performance earns 8. Six stars make the maximum of 24.

  • Below the one-star mark, you get 0 for that event and still go on to the next.

  • You must take part in every event. Missing one means disqualification.

Men

You choose long jump or high jump, and 100 m or 400 m. The rope must be climbed with the hands only: using your legs or body earns zero stars. You get two chances at rope climbing and at the jump, and the better attempt counts. The run is one chance only.

200 m run

Two chances for the long jump and the throw; one chance for the run.

Ex-servicemen

Ex-servicemen have their own three events: a 7.26 kg shot put (one star 5.0 m, two stars 6.0 m), long jump (3.25 m / 4.50 m) or high jump (0.90 m / 1.40 m), and a 100 m run (17.00 / 13.50 seconds) or 400 m run (85.00 / 70.00 seconds).

These tables are from the 2025 Common Recruitment notification (PDF, in Tamil). TNUSRB's Common Recruitment page shows the same targets but older rules (three chances per event), so go by the notification for your recruitment.

TNUSRB SI physical test: same targets, different marks

The SI physical test uses the same height, chest and endurance standards, and the same event targets for men and women as the constable tables above. What changes is the scoring (TNUSRB SI notification 2025, PDF):

Constable

SI (open quota)

One star

4 marks

2 marks

Two stars

8 marks

5 marks

PET maximum

24

15

  • SI candidates must also take part in all three events, or they are disqualified. Only those who clear the measurement test and the run and take part in every PET event are eligible for the viva-voce.

  • In the 2025 SI notification, men got two chances at rope climbing and the jump, women two at the jump and the throw, and one chance at the run.

  • Departmental-quota candidates (serving police personnel) are exempt from the measurement test and the PET. They still run the endurance test.

A man in the constable recruitment who gets two stars in rope climbing and the 100 m run but one star in the long jump scores 8 + 8 + 4 = 20 of 24. When written scores are bunched close together, those PET marks often decide who makes the final list. The written exam still matters most: see how it works in the TN Police Constable exam guide and the TN Police SI exam guide.

How to train for the physical test

The written result usually leaves only weeks before the physical tests, so start training while you study.

  • Build up the run gradually. Increase your distance and pace a little each week rather than jumping to full distance. Once a week, time yourself over the exact test distance.

  • Practise every event, not just running. Rope climbing with the hands only takes grip and upper-body strength that build slowly. Practise the long or high jump and the throw with the right technique, ideally with a PT instructor or an experienced trainer watching.

  • Pick your options early. Decide between long jump and high jump, and between the shorter and longer sprint, by timing and measuring yourself, then train for those.

  • Warm up properly before every session and on test day.

  • Wear shoes you have trained in. Test day is not the time to break in new footwear.

  • Rest before the test. Avoid hard training in the last day or two, sleep well, and eat and drink as you normally do.

  • Have your documents ready. Certificate verification comes first: carry the originals of everything you uploaded with your application, with photocopies.

If you have an injury or a health condition, see a doctor before training hard.

Don't let the written exam slip

The written exam carries 70 of the 100 marks and decides who gets called for the physical test at all. Thervu's TN Police mock tests are timed, in Tamil and English, marked the moment you submit, and bring your wrong answers back for revision.

Frequently asked questions

What is the height for TN Police constable?

At least 170 cm for men and 159 cm for women in the OC, BC, BCM and MBC/DNC categories, and 167 cm and 157 cm for SC, SC(A) and ST. Men also need a chest of 81 cm with at least 5 cm expansion. Transgender candidates meet the standards of the gender, male or female, they chose in the application. The SI standards are the same.

What is the running time in the TN Police physical test?

The endurance run is 1,500 metres in 7 minutes for men and 400 metres in 2 minutes 30 seconds for women. Ex-servicemen get 8 minutes for 1,500 metres. It is qualifying only.

How many marks is the TNUSRB physical test?

For constables, the Physical Efficiency Test carries 24 of the 100 final marks: three events, 4 marks for one star and 8 for two stars. For SI open-quota candidates it carries 15: 2 marks for one star and 5 for two stars. Height, chest and the endurance run carry no marks.

Is rope climbing compulsory for men?

Yes. Rope climbing is one of the three events for men, and you must take part in every event or you are disqualified. The rope must be climbed with the hands only; using the legs or body earns zero stars.

What happens if I get zero stars in one event?

You get 0 marks for that event and can carry on to the next one. Skipping an event is different: candidates who don't take part in every event are disqualified.

Are the physical tests the same for constable and SI?

The height, chest, endurance run and event targets are the same. The marks differ: 4 and 8 marks per event for constables (out of 24), 2 and 5 marks for SI (out of 15). SI departmental-quota candidates are exempt from the measurement test and the efficiency test.
